In an endurance world obstacle races may seem more geared for the male racer. However, SHAPE has taken that vision, made a few tweaks, and created the SHAPE Diva Dash. Kristine Scichilone, promotions director for SHAPE says, "There are not a lot of obstacle races out there for women. The company we partnered with, Adventure Fit, Inc., put together the Urban Assault Ride (male and female race together). Adventure Fit was so excited to do this with us because with the co-ed races it's mainly male. Races are usually skewed 70 percent male. Since there hasn't been anything out there that's female only, we are excited to know we are the only ones out there right now."
From 5Ks to triathlons, there seems to be a race for any type of woman. And now obstacle races can enter the women-only category. "What's great about an all-female obstacle race is that it's not intimidating. It's a place to build friendships and create fun memories," says John Balen, associate publisher of marketing for SHAPE. Whether you're an elite or a recreational athlete, nowadays you have plenty of race options to choose from.
What makes the SHAPE Diva Dash such a unique and memorable race? "I think for women it becomes more of a bonding experience. Women come in groups, dressed in a theme; they're to support someone...it's got a great bonding element to it," says Balen.
Of course everything is nicely labeled and organized. Need to know where to check-in, register, check gear, or start? It's simple, there are huge signs labeled so you can find what you're looking for easily.
