Ah yes, running in the spring in Maryland. You should add the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Frederick Running Festival to your plans on Saturday May, 2011. There are many reasons why you and friends and family will want to run the Frederick Running Festival. Here are the top three:
First, The Convenience: This entire event is built around the concept of convenience for the participants. From packet pickup and the excellent fairgrounds venue to the Saturday schedule – it's all designed for your convenience.
Second, it's an event for the whole family. Yes, it is! You often hear "an event for all", but with Frederick it truly is. With the awesome half marathon, team relay, open 5K, kids' fun run, and their Celebration Village and Expo at beautiful Frederick Fairgrounds, there is a race and activity for everyone and something for everyone to do.
Third, they have a great location, the lovely city of Frederick. Frederick is a quaint old town with lots of history and charm, a lot to offer, and is a great venue for running. Yes, this race provides an enjoyable running tour through a wonderful small city.
Changing to better serve runners (and walkers); it's all about convenience.
There are big changes to the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Frederick Running Festival for 2011. The marathon has been dropped and the half marathon has been moved to Saturday. These changes were made primarily for the safety of the runners, but will also increase the convenience and enjoyment for participants. This decision has not dampened interest because registration is up by 40% and the half marathon is on track to fill up the 5,000-runner field. And they kept the popular "Maryland Double", combining with the Baltimore Festival in October.
Lee Corrigan, President of CSE, said, "These early numbers support our decision to focus our efforts on the half-marathon distance. We anticipated a high percentage of runners who previously participated in this event's full marathon would simply sign-up for the half-marathon and that seems to be the case at this stage."
The CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Frederick Running Festival has always been known for runner convenience, and now has taken steps to create an even better experience this year. Runners can now pick up their race packets Monday through Thursday at various off-site locations in Baltimore, Montgomery County, Howard County and Northern Virginia. This gives runners the option of picking up their bib number and chip in a convenient location for them, easing the stress (and lines) of race weekend.
"It's about the runners," says Race Director, Rachel Ridgway. "We focus on pleasing the runners. Being runners ourselves we try to anticipate their needs and incorporate them into our race so we can put on the best event possible," she continued.
Last year 6,000 runners participated in the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Frederick Running Festival. Organizers expect the same or more on Saturday May 7th. Registration is already tracking significantly above previous years.
And a new Saturday start!
Moving the races to Saturday makes the whole weekend more convenient in this case. With the Saturday start the half marathon will now go off an hour later at 7:00 a.m., giving runners time to sleep in a bit. And those traveling to the event have another day to recover or tour scenic Frederick, and refuel and recover at one of the great restaurants. The new configuration increases the convenience for everyone and should make for a better all-around experience for runners.
"The race was well organized, start was not too congested, and aid stations were well-stocked," said a 2010 participant.
