During the summer months, many of us deviate from our usual schedules and are more social with all of the BBQs, vacations and meals at outdoor cafes. Straying from the norm can lead to less control over meal ingredients and consuming not-so-healthy food items.

Organization plays a critical role in weight maintenance. This summer—and during every season—try to sick to a schedule, set goals and consider the following solutions to avoid weight gain.

Eat Before Dining Out

Situation: You worked out in the morning, so you can meet friends out for dinner later. At around 3 or 4 p.m., you start feeling hungry, but you hold off on a snack because you're going out and think you'll probably eat more than usual at the restaurant.

Solution: You can't save up calories. If you skip that afternoon snack you probably will overeat later. Overindulgence can lead to an additional 400 calories—and quick.

Save yourself from bread baskets and chips and salsa, and fuel your body when it needs it.
If dinner is in an hour or two, have a fiber bar, fruit and a little nut butter or Greek yogurt. Pair a carb with protein. You and your body will be happy with the results.

Limit Sugary Frozen Drinks and Extra Salt on Your Margarita

Situation: It's hot outside, and you're in the mood for a cold drink. Remember: Many frozen drinks taste like milkshakes for a reason. One mudslide from a popular restaurant chain has around 800 calories and more than 30 grams of fat. You read that right.

Solution: When you're out for drinks with friends, limit/avoid mixed and frozen, fruity drinks like pina coladas and daiquiris. Several companies now offer lighter versions of those popular mixed cocktails to make at home. You can shave off significant calories with those substitutes.

In the mood for something fruity? Go for sangria. This will decrease the sugar from juices, and you'll get some real fruit to boot.

Choosing clear liquors with no-calorie sodas may be the best option. Clear liquors are low in calories, and adding no-calorie sodas will keep the tally low.

Try a vodka-soda (seltzer) with a splash of cranberry juice and a few limes or a wine spritzer (wine is diluted with soda water and ice) with lemon or cucumber.
