It's a new year, a time when many people set sport-related and fitness goals. Why not take on three goals this year and compete in your first triathlon?
Training for a triathlon can help you meet fitness or weight loss goals and keep you motivated to live a healthy lifestyle.
What is Triathlon?
Triathlon, a sport combining a swim, bike and run, has grown rapidly in the past 15 years and more first timers are putting their endurance to the test by participating in this fun and invigorating sport.
Triathlon race events come in many shapes and sizes and can be for just about any level of athlete. The standard triathlon distances are:
- Sprint distance (400 yard swim/12 mile bike/3 mile run)
- Olympic distance (1500 meter swim/26 mile bike/6.2 mile run)
- Half-Ironman distance (1.2 mile swim/56 mile bike/13 mile run)
- Ironman distance (2.4 mile swim/112 mile bike/26.2 mile run).
6 Tips for your First Triathlon
1. Gear and Equipment
Triathletes oftentimes race and train in "tri suits." This is a swim, bike and run outfit that can be worn the entire event. Instead of trying to change from your swim clothes to your bike clothes and from your bike to your run clothes, you can be more efficient and comfortable wearing a tri suit, which can come as a full one-piece suit or a two-piece set.
For the swim, you need goggles and swim cap. If your event is in a lake or the ocean, you should consider purchasing a wetsuit.
