How to Beat the Heat in El Paso

With average June temperatures at 95-degrees F, El Paso summers can be muy caliente, and the city's 4,000 foot elevation can make you pant like a perro. But don't let this thwart your outdoor aspirations. Just make like an early bird and avoid the mid-day sunshine. Here's how to stay active in El Paso.

Where to Stay

Our first-hand tours uncovered several athletic-minded hotels, spas, and bed and breakfasts. Here's what we found.

Hilton Garden Inn El Paso
915.351.2121 /

Adjacent to the UTEP campus, this two-year-old hotel boasts impressively upscale common areas, comfortable and stylish rooms, a tasty and affordable ($10) breakfast buffet and an El Paso workout option second to none.

Guests desiring a convenient sweat at the hotel can ride one or the newly purchased True Cardio machines (treadmill, recumbent bike, elliptical) inside the 1st floor gym. A strength workout here will be limited by HGI's limited selection of weight equipment--one multigym, however, guests have another option: Pick up a $7 pass from the front desk for complete access to UTEP's Fitness and Aquatic Center (see our description below). UTEP is only five minutes by car, a 10-minute run or a 15-minute walk.

Radisson El Paso Airport
915.772.3333 /

Located about a mile from the terminals, this Radisson offers the best athletic-minded accommodation for travelers seeking an El Paso Airport abode. Perks such as complimentary cook-to-order breakfasts and evening free cocktail hours (2 drinks, 430pm-630pm) should entice you out of your spacious studio, deluxe or one-bedroom suite.

Sweat the day's calories and stress away at Radisson's superbly stocked ground-level fitness center. Choose among seven separate Cybex weight stations, three True treadmills, one True recumbent bike and one True elliptical machine. A one-lane indoor pool lies adjacent to the gym, but its short length poses a challenge for accruing any significant back and forth yardage.

Where to Sweat (Beyond Your Hotel)

For those in search of a favorite workout machine, group therapy (i.e., fitness classes), a true lap pool, or a more traditional health club experience, here are your best bets.

UTEP Swimming & Fitness Center /

If you followed our hotel recommendation and booked a room at the Hilton Garden Inn, you'll receive special guest privileges to this fabulous swim and gym complex for $7 per day (other non-members are not allowed). Most impressive is the facility's two-pool aquatic center with more than a dozen lanes of competition-quality, 25-yard swimming. In addition to the water options, you'll find a fair amount of decent quality cardio and strength equipment around the fitness floor. The gym's ambiance is somewhat industrial and dreary, but the coeds' vivacity certainly energizes the room.
