Description

We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Saturday, March 21, 2020.

This event is canceled due to City directive. For updates, visit santamonica.gov/coronavirus. To stay tuned for future programs, please add yourself to the email list at http://smgov.net/artsignup. We are working closely with the LA County Department of Public Health to monitor the novel coronavirus. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the City of Santa Monica is cancelling all Camera Obscura Art Lab activities effective immediately through March 31, 2020. We will follow up with refund information starting the week of March 23, 2020. For more preventative steps and the latest Santa Monica-specific information about the novel coronavirus, visit santamonica.gov/coronavirus.

As a reminder, please stay home when sick, wash your hand often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

To stay informed, sign up for Santa Monica news at santamonica.gov/newsletter and emergency alerts at www.santamonica.gov/alerts. You can also follow Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

PLEASE NOTE THERE IS A $10 CASH MATERIAL FEE DUE TO THE INSTRUCTOR.

This class will cover major shibori resist techniques like Kanoko (similar to western tie-dye), Kumo (pleated and thread-bound resists), Arashi (pole-wrapped resists), Itajime (folded fabric using clamped resists), and includes examples of Bomaki (pleated and wrapped to include texture as well as color) and Nui (sewn resists), though we will not have time in class to do these forms. We'll talk about how to use found and upcycled objects and how to combine techniques and layers of dye for unique effects.

Materials fee of $10 (cash only, payable to instructor on class day) includes all resist materials and sample swatches for experimenting before dyeing your projects. Students may bring up to 4 items for dyeing. Items should be primarily (70% or more) natural fiber, including cotton, linen, bamboo, silk and thin wool. Wovens fabrics work better than knits for clean lines, but tee shirts are fine.

PLEASE DO NOT bring denim, canvas, cotton or wool fleece, yardage cuts longer than a yard, or other heavy fabric items like sweaters or hoodies; these items require a significant amount of extra dye. Instructor will email more specific details and instructions to registered students before class. Students who are also taking the afternoon Stitched Resist class pay a total of $15 materials fees to cover both sessions.

Laura Davis is a fourth generation Californian who has spent the past 22 years living in Los Angeles. She is a lifelong addict to all kinds of textile arts, including crochet & knit, sewing, embroidery, weaving, spinning, dyeing and botanical printing. California is a rich environment for materials to use in dyeing, printing, and other arts & crafts, and Laura spends a great deal of time exploring and discovering, collecting, and experimenting with ways to use our natural bounty in textile arts. Laura has been teaching fiber art classes through Griffin Dyeworks since 2015 and now teaches tie dye, ice dye, natural dye, and other textile arts classes for adults, teens, and children throughout the year.

The Camera Obscura Art Lab hosts six artists-in-residence annually, and offers workshops with a changing roster of residents and teaching artists. Here you can learn dance moves, polish your writing, sew a seam, check out artists at work and find a creative community!
