This class will introduce participants to traditional and contemporary ways to create handmade books using decorative papers and stab binding. We will start by creating our own papers using various surface design techniques. Students will then be shown the classic Japanese stab binding process and a selection of more complex bindings that incorporate symbols and lettering. Participants will create 3 or 4 books using bindings of their choice. Pages can be embellished with stamping and collage, pockets created within the books can be used to store mementos like postcards, tickets and notes. These books make great travel journals, they are light and easy to carry and can be made from any papers to hand. I never travel without one!
