2009 Boston Marathon to Be Broadcast Live

Four-time Boston Marathon winner and record-holder, Robert Cheruiyot from Kenya, and U.S. Olympians Ryan Hall, Brian Sell and Kara Goucher are set to lead an elite field in the 2009 Boston Marathon.

Universal Sports will provide live, worldwide coverage of the 113th Boston Marathon via Universal Sports TV and UniversalSports.com/marathon, where fans can watch the world's top marathon runners compete head-to-head in this coveted event. Coverage starts at 9:30 a.m. ET on April 20.

The historic BAA Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon. It is considered to be one of the most difficult in the World Marathon Majors series because of its numerous hills, including those toward the end of the race. About 25,000 runners will attempt to tackle the course, while a crowd of roughly 500,000 spectators will gather to see the race firsthand.

World Marathon Majors

The 2009 Boston Marathon kicks off Universal Sports' TV and online coverage of the 2009 World Marathon Majors, which includes the Flora London Marathon, real Berlin Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and ends with the ING New York City Marathon in November.

The World Marathon Majors first began in 2006 with an attempt to increase interest in running, raise awareness of marathon athletes, and advance the sport of marathon running. The top male and female marathon runners in the world compete.  Collectively, there are over 5 million live spectators at the World Marathon Majors and 250 million television views.  Over 300,000 people apply to run in the marathon and approximately half as many participate. The World Marathon Majors also raise over $80 million for charity.

In addition to broadcasting the World Marathon Majors, Universal Sports will also provide coverage of the Los Angeles, Stockholm, and Beijing Marathons, starting at the end of May. Universal Sports will broadcast coverage of the full World Marathon Majors season for the second year in a row, in its continued support for the sport of track and field.
