A look inside Uncle Knobby's survival pack

Q: I'd like to know what to carry in a survival pack. I always carry my Topeak 21 multi-tool, as well as some patches and a pump. What am I forgetting?

A: There are several schools of thought on survival gear. The Techno Yuppie school says that you carry nothing in your pack but a cell phone, a GPS receiver, and a platinum MasterCard. When your bike breaks, you note your location's coordinates on the GPS, call your bike boutique.

Me? With my discovery of back hydration packs and the vast storage capacity that many of them have, I carry:

  • CO2 inflator
  • Spare cartridge
  • Spare tube
  • Multi-tool
  • Separate small adjustable wrench (metric, by the way)
  • Some plastic tire-irons
  • A two-month old guacamole-and-anchovy sandwich and a much-thumbed copy of Robert Persig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance."
  • A first-aid kit, although I have no idea what's inside.

Since I've started carrying this thoughtful assemblage of life-saving tools, I haven't had a single failure. Well, except for one broken crank-arm and one broken frame.
