Animal Portraits (Painting in Oils) w/Ernie Norcia A twelve (12) session course
Animals, especially our pets, contribute so much to our lives. This course, Animal Portraits will focus on approaches to portraying the look and character of specific animals that you care about. Although an excellent discipline would be to paint from life, most animals like to move around – a lot. Therefore, the course will be in two parts. The first part deals with how to photograph an animal to generate useful reference. The second part deals with the art of translating our reference into handsome drawings and paintings. Of utmost importance is an understanding of how to use light to reveal the volume, texture and colors of our subjects. The course will emphasize developing artworks that reflect active, living, breathing animals.
Class focus: 1. Focus on process rather than outcome.
2. How are students going to use what they learn?
3. Elements to consider are unity of surface, orchestration of color, movement of lines and shapes, movement of light across surfaces.
