The Best Triathlon Training Gear: Our Favorite Products to Swim, Bike, and Run

Whether you're a veteran, world champion, or newbie triathlete, you already know that the fourth leg of this sport is the gear. The right stuff can make the difference between a PR and a DNF. From the big-ticket items to the little extras, we've done the research and compiled a list of everything you need to cross the finish line successfully.

If you're gearing up for a short race or if you're not sure how you'll like the sport, zero in on the essentials such as swim goggles, a dependable bike, and quality running shoes. If you're looking to improve your performance or have your eyes on a longer event (e.g., half or full Ironman), you may want to invest a little more money into your arsenal. It’s no secret that the triathlon is an equipment heavy (and expensive!) sport, so follow our advice to discover the gear we're loving right now.

What to Look for When Shopping for Triathlon Gear

The triathlon can be intimidating, not to mention expensive, when it comes to gear. This unique sport combines three very different events, so staying safe and comfortable on race day can be a real challenge. If you're gearing up for your first triathlon, you can aim for just the essentials, such as goggles, a swim cap, a bike, a helmet, cycling shoes (or cages), and running shoes. There are many extras that can make your experience more comfortable and potentially faster, but you can decide what is a priority and what you might want to skip.

If you want the most bang for your buck, look for items that promise to wick away moisture and reduce chafing. If you’ll be doing a lot of cold-water swims, a wet suit is an investment that can keep you warm and add buoyancy. For sprint or Olympic-distance events, a road bike will work just fine, but if you plan on competing in longer distances, consider upgrading to a triathlon-specific bike or picking up a pair of aerobars.

Looking for a gift for your favorite triathlete? There are several big-ticket items to consider (we see you, wetsuits), but don’t overlook the little extras that can make a noticeable difference. Items like moisture-wicking socks, energy gels, a hat or sunglasses, and a hydration pack will go a long way in improving the race day experience.

Best Helmet - Lazer Z1 MIPS Helmet

lazer-helmet

CHECK PRICE

This premium helmet from the Belgian brand Lazer is comprised of four distinct protection components. The outer polycarbonate shell and inner EPS foam lining protect against initial impact. The Lazer Z1 also includes an extension of the shell to protect the vulnerable temple area and a final layer of MIPS technology to protect against rotational impact. MIPS refers to the Swedish technology that relies on an inner basket that rotates upon impact. This basket can absorb some of the rotational energy that is particularly damaging to the brain.

To help cyclists get the perfect snug fit, the Lazer Z1 is outfitted with a top-mounted Advanced Rollsys retention system to allow for horizontal and vertical size adjustments. If you'll be riding in warm weather, the 31 vents will go a long way in increasing air flow. Weighing in at 190 grams, this helmet isn’t the lightest or most aerodynamic option on the market, but its safety and fit features more than make up for a few extra grams of weight.

PROS

  • Top-mounted Advanced Rollsys retention system allows for both horizontal and vertical adjustment
  • MIPS (multi-dimensional impact protection system) decreases rotational energy upon impact
  • T-pro protection provides additional layer of safety to the temple area of the head
  • Over 30 vents to provide air flow and cooling during hot rides

CONS

  • Helmet only comes in 3 sizes so cyclists with very small or large heads might not get a good fit
  • A bit heavier and not as aerodynamic as some other helmets

FAQs About Triathlon Gear

What equipment do I need for a triathlon?

The triathlon is a gear-heavy sport, so you’ll need to stock up before race day. If you're looking for the essentials, you’ll want to make sure you have the following items: swimsuit or tri-suit, swim goggles, swim cap, a bike (any well-maintained road bike is just fine if you’re starting out), cycling shoes, cycling shorts and singlet (if you’re not wearing a tri-suit), a flat tire repair kit, a helmet, running shoes, and running shorts (if you're not wearing a tri-suit).

Some other essentials include cycling/running socks, a race belt, sunglasses, a hat, a sports watch or fitness tracker, a transition bag, and a water bottle. If you find yourself really getting into the sport or competing in longer distances, you’ll want to consider higher-end items such as a wetsuit, aero bars for your bike, smart goggles, and specialized nutrition items.

Do you change clothes during a triathlon?

Most triathletes don't change their main clothes during a race. Tri-suits are very popular and can be worn for all three events. They're typically made from lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics and have a lightly padded bottom for comfort on the bike. Some triathletes choose to wear a swimsuit during the first event and then quickly put on biking and running shorts during the transition.

Regardless of whether you wear a tri-suit or a sport-specific outfit, your swim cap, goggles, cycling shoes, running shoes, hat, and sunglasses will all be moving pieces during the event. And of course, if you wear a wetsuit for the swim, you'll want to strip that off before getting on the bike!

Do you wear a sports bra for a triathlon?

Most female triathletes wear sports bras during the event. Many tri-suits can be unzipped a bit when things heat up, so wearing a sports bra underneath will provide coverage and support. If an athlete chooses to wear a swimsuit throughout the race, this is the exception. In this case, a sports bra might not be necessary.
