About this event
In this thought-provoking class, we will study various ways to include language in our compositions. The words can be a background, can create a subtle message, can be used to create a graphic element or pattern, or can become the central element of the artwork. We will look at contemporary artists who use language such as Hank Willis Thomas, Barbara Kruger, and Jenny Holzer as well as looking back at how the Dadaists used language in their powerful yet strange collages. We will complete multiple pieces on paper during this workshop and techniques will include: arranging and gluing words (brought to class by students) on the surface to create patterns, handwriting on top of paint layers, carving words into wet paint, stenciling letters on to the surface, partially hiding words with layers of paint or collage, and image transferring newspaper and magazine text, just to name a few. This class is for all levels.
