San Francisco Conservatory of Music50 Oak Street San Francisco, CA 94102
This course offers a deep dive into the world of polyphony - music in two or more voices each having a melody of its own. Two-voice works by Renaissance masters will show the genesis of musical imitation, canons, and rounds. More expansive genres, such as madrigals, motets, and Masses, will lead us to impressive heights. We will witness the transformation in style from Renaissance to Baroque that begins with courtly dances and culminates in that most impressive form used by Bach, Bartók, and many in-between: the fugue.
Prior knowledge of music theory is recommended. The ability to read music, and a good working understanding of key signatures and harmonic analysis will enhance a student’s enjoyment of this course. Please contact Harry Whitney at email@example.com to see if this class would be a good fit for you.
Classes will be held online
