Skechers AERO Elite Review: Inside the Brand's First Super Shoe

Skechers AERO Elite

Quick answer: The Skechers AERO Elite is the brand's first carbon-plated super shoe, built for racing anything from a 5K to a marathon. It weighs 5.9 ounces in a men's size 9, pairs supercritical Hyper Burst Pro foam with a full-length Quantum Plate, and delivers a cushioned, smooth, notably quiet ride that's fast on the straightaways.

On the night of September 23, Skechers rolled out the AERO Elite inside an airport hangar in Long Beach, California. Runners, media and the people who designed the shoe gathered under the lights for a first look. For a brand most people know for comfort, launching a race shoe in a place built for things that go fast felt like a pretty clear message.

The AERO Elite makes its global racing debut on October 1, 2026. Skechers calls it its most technically advanced running shoe to date, and it's openly framed as a statement of intent ahead of the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, just up the road from where it was launched.

I got to hear from the people who built it, and since then I've put my own miles on it.

What Is the Skechers AERO Elite?

The AERO Elite sits at the top of the Skechers AERO Series as a race-day shoe for 5K through the marathon. Skechers says the goal was to cut weight and maximize responsiveness without giving up the comfort the brand is known for.

Spec Skechers AERO Elite
Weight 5.9 oz / 167 g (men's 9); 5.0 oz / 142 g (women's 7)
Stack height 40 mm heel, 36 mm forefoot
Offset 4 mm
Plate Full-length, carbon-infused Quantum Plate
Midsole foam Hyper Burst Pro (supercritical)
Style numbers Men's #246270 WMLT; Women's #172270 WMLT

That 40 mm heel puts the AERO Elite right at the maximum stack height World Athletics allows for road racing shoes, a limit discussed in recent research published in Sports Medicine – Open.

The tech, piece by piece

  • Hyper Burst Pro foam. An ultralight supercritical foam used in both the midsole and the sockliner. It's tuned for a supportive but highly responsive ride.
  • Quantum Plate. A full-length, carbon-infused plate with a curved, spoon-like shape. Its design borrows from the Voronoi principle, the efficient geometric patterns found in nature, to add structure and propulsion with as little material as possible.
  • Hyper Arc technology. Skechers' transition geometry, meant to keep your stride efficient from the first mile to the last.
  • Upper and fit. A breathable woven jacquard upper with a Performance FitKnit tongue and sawtooth laces for lockdown.
  • Lite Grip outsole. A TPU outsole that adds traction and durability without adding much weight.
  • Low-light visibility. Reflective material around the laces for early-morning and night runs.

How Did Skechers Build Its First Super Shoe?

The most interesting part of the launch night was hearing how much the shoe changed before it reached the starting line. According to the team, runner feedback drove the design.

"We listened to the people who run in the shoes to make improvements," said Dan Sullivan, VP of Skechers Performance. "We made several iterations to the shoe throughout the design process and even added more foam back into the sole for more stability on those longer runs."

I liked hearing that. A lot of super shoes are built to be as light as possible, so it's interesting that Skechers went the other way and added foam back for the longer stuff.

Tony Macey, Senior Director of Technical Development, said the priority was ride quality. "We wanted to give the runner the smoothest ride possible," he said, explaining that the team "tuned the foam" specifically for runners.

The design team had a good line, too. "The shoe looks fast, even standing still," said Andrew James, Senior Footwear Designer. He said the team wanted a super shoe that could handle everything from 5Ks to marathons, and even everyday training.

Catherine Zou, Senior Director of Product Development, framed the AERO Elite in the launch announcement as the culmination of years of elite-level work and the pinnacle of the AERO Series, calling it "Comfort That Performs."

How Does the AERO Elite Feel on the Run?

My overall take: it's well cushioned, very light and ready for you to set your PR.

Fit

The first thing I noticed was the fit. It matched the shape of my foot so well it almost felt like it had been modeled on it, with no pressure points anywhere. I usually lace lock my shoes, but the AERO Elite doesn't have that extra eyelet at the top, so I couldn't. Honestly, I didn't miss it.

Cushioning and ride

The cushioning is very good. There's plenty of foam underfoot, and the heel is designed for a smoother transition, which I could feel on the run. I think that's what Macey meant when he talked about tuning the foam for runners.

Where I liked it most was on the straightaways. Once I settled into a rhythm on a long stretch, holding the pace felt easy.

The 5-mile test

Here's the result that got my attention: I ran my fastest 5-mile time of the year in these shoes. To be fair, a couple of other things may have played into it. It was a bit cooler than it's been all summer, and I'd taken a couple of rest days beforehand, so I can't give the shoe all the credit. What I can tell you is that I felt great from start to finish.

One quirk worth mentioning

The AERO Elite is quieter than other super shoes I've run in. Every so often, though, I heard a muffled sound from air getting trapped under the sole. It didn't affect how the shoe performed. It's just something I noticed from time to time.

Quick Tip

Test any super shoe on a tempo run or two before race day. You'll learn how the plate feels at your goal pace, and you won't be surprised by fit or sound mid-race.

Who Should Buy the Skechers AERO Elite?

The AERO Elite is for runners chasing a PR at any distance from 5K to the marathon. If you want a light, cushioned race shoe that stays smooth late in a race, it belongs on your shortlist. Its extra foam and smooth heel transition also make it a reasonable pick for marathoners who find some super shoes too unstable.

It sells for about $225 at launch (Believe in the Run; Running Warehouse). It's available at Skechers stores, skechers.com and specialty running shops in North America, Europe and other key markets.

Where it fits in the AERO lineup

Shoe Best for
AERO Elite Race day, 5K to marathon
AERO Razor Tempo runs, workouts and faster days ($140)
AERO Spark Reliable daily training
AERO Burst Soft, protective cushioning for easy and long runs

The AERO Burst and AERO Spark also come with Skechers Hands Free Slip-ins.

A new name on the roster

Skechers also added Shelby Houlihan to its performance team. She's a 14-time U.S. national champion and the American record holder in the 1500m, and she's been training in AERO Series shoes ahead of the 2027 season.

What's next for super shoes?

So where does the category go from here? According to Tony Macey, the biggest advancements right now are in new and improved foams and in different plate technology. With the 2028 Games coming to Los Angeles, I'd expect Skechers to keep working on both.

The verdict

For a first try at a super shoe, Skechers got a lot right. The AERO Elite is light and well cushioned, the heel transition is smooth, and it felt great on the straightaways. The fit was one of the best I've had. The muffled air sound popped up now and then, but it never got in the way of a run. If you're shopping for a race shoe this fall, I'd put it on your list to try on.
