What To Look For in a Ski Helmet

Construction

The ski helmet construction generally consists of the outer shell and the lining. Lining types and components are discussed below in the safety section as they are widely considered some of the biggest safety factors in a ski helmet. Construction for the outer shell is absolutely a contributor to safety and impact protection. Hardshell construction is the standard in the industry and comes in many flavors. New materials are constantly being developed and launching in the market. Some brands like Sweet Protection are even using carbon fiber for innovative lightweight helmets.

Ventilation

Temperature regulation in helmets can be tricky. Balancing protection with comfort can come at a cost. If you plan to prioritize downhill skiing, great ventilation may not be such a high priority, but if you'll be skinning up the slopes as well, this is something you'll want to pay attention to.

Many helmets come equipped with adjustable vents that can be opened or closed depending on weather and activity. Helmets with Koroyd have the added benefit of requiring fewer vents to be cut through the shell and lining, as the tubular structure allows air to move freely through the entire surface of the core.

Safety

The big name in helmet safety tech is MIPS. Found in ski helmets, bicycle helmets, and even motorcycle helmets, MIPS (short for Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is designed to reduce rotational impact during crashes at high speeds. A low-friction layer separates the shell and liner of the helmet, allowing a sliding movement between the layers, which mimics the brain's natural protective structure. MIPS technology has been shown to significantly decrease the likelihood of trauma to the brain on impact.

Koroyd is an exciting recent addition to ski helmet linings. Composed of thousands of co-polymer tubes thermo welded into a honeycomb structure, it offers a light, breathable alternative to EPS foam. Koroyd promises consistent protection against direct and rotational force due to sacrificial plastic deformation, allowing for superior force absorption. This does mean that a helmet needs to be replaced after impact as the material does not bounce back to its original shape. Koroyd does not stiffen or soften with temperature fluctuations between -20 degrees C to 50 C (-4 F to 122 F).

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) foam is a rigid, closed-cell foam made of pre-expanded polystyrene beads that has been used in the lining and ski helmets and other sport helmets since the 1970s. Many helmets are designed with dual-density EPS foam liners to combine the benefits of high-density and low-density foams. High-density foams are better for energy transfer reduction in high-speed impacts and lower-density foam is more effective in slow-speed, low-energy impacts.

Weight

Technology has come a long way to offer superior safety features and protection for your noggin, with lightweight comfortability that allows you to forget you're wearing anything at all. Some of those lightweight technologies come with a heavy price tag, but your brain is worth it.

Sizing

Unless your helmet fits snugly on your dome, all the safety features in the world won't protect you. A well-fitted helmet should hold tightly but not painfully to the forehead. A great test is to push up on the front brim of the helmet when it is securely in place. The front pads should draw the forehead up with the helmet as you move it.

Some helmets include removable pads, which can affect fit, so make sure to try it on with all the configurations you might wear on the slopes. Most helmets come with adjustability features, but proper sizing is step number one!

The BOA Fit Adjustment System utilizes a small dial, which smoothly tightens a helmet down. You've probably seen the BOA system in action on ski boots, snowshoes, or even a backpacking tent. Its uses are seemingly endless when it comes to the perfect fit.

Certifications

The US and European certifications similarly test helmets on the market for effective protection against impact, but they do have some differences. For top marks and international saleability, some companies obtain dual certification for their products.

ASTM F2040 - American Society of Testing and Materials

  • CE: European Certification EN 1077
  • Class A or Class B: Class A refers to helmets with hard earmuffs and are used primarily for ski racing. Class B have soft earmuffs and are used for most skiing purposes.

FAQs About Ski Helmets

What is the difference between a ski helmet and a snowboard helmet?

While many helmets are marketed for skiing OR snowboarding, there are no technical differences in the features directed to safety or functionality. The aesthetic difference between sports styles is reflected in those helmets that are marketed specifically, but here's your permission to let your personal style be the determining factor!

Do you wear a hat under a ski helmet?

Ski helmets are designed with warmth and insulation in mind. Most days, you shouldn't need a hat under your helmet to stay warm on the slopes. But if you get cold easily or you’re out on a particularly cold day, you might want to layer up. Beware when adding gear under your helmet not to compromise the snug fit of the helmet on your head.

Should I buy a ski helmet with MIPS?

A head injury from skiing won't just ruin your season, it could have lasting impacts on the rest of your life. Helmets without MIPS technology can still receive US and European certifications and protect your brain from many crashes and impacts. But a MIPS helmet adds a layer of protection that is unmatched by other protections. It can add a bit to the overall cost, but with proper care and no direct impacts, a ski helmet can last for several seasons. It only takes one bad edge for that investment to pay off.
