Normally, we love Governors Island, but I have a bad feeling about this.
Governors Island was completely off limits to normal New Yorkers for 200 years and now it's a wonderful destination with the best views of lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn coastline, and the New York Harbor. What nobody tells you about though is the terrifying history of the place. Military executions, accidents, tragedies, and more - buried safely in mass graves and abandoned cemeteries. Let’s just say you’d best run a FAST 5K or 10K.
After you’ve scared yourself silly, stick around for Halloween treats, including candy! Costumes encouraged!
Your entry to the NYCRUNS Haunted Island 5K and 10K includes a ferry ride, your race-entry, a snazzy tech t-shirt, and post-race eats. Then make a day of it and stick around for island fun, including all sorts of Halloween goodness.
Feel like doing this one independently? You may also choose the virtual option.
Please be aware that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all aspects of this race are extremely subject to change.
A whirlwind tour of Governors with amazing views! The 5K is one loop of the course; the 10K is two loops.
Event details and schedule
All guests over 18 must register themselves. Guests ages 6-17 may be registered by a parent. Children 5 and under do not need a guest bib. Guests will only be permitted on the 8:30AM ferry, not the earlier ferries for runners. Information regarding public access to Governors Island is available here.
COVID-19 has changed many things about our events. The following procedures are planned for this event. Prior to the race you will receive more information if changes or additions are necessary.
- You may not attend the event if you have experienced symptoms of COVID-19 or tested positive in the fourteen (14) days prior to the event.
- If you test positive for COVID-19 within the fourteen days following the event, you must email email@example.com so that we may notify staff and participants as necessary.
- If you are not vaccinated, you must wear a face covering throughout this event other than when running. When running, you may remove the covering only when you can maintain social distance and the covering must remain around your head in some fashion so it can easily be reapplied.
- In order to manage crowding, spectators are discouraged at the race, particularly at the start and finish. NYCRUNS reserves the right to ask spectators to leave the race site.
Bag check will be provided. To reduce interaction with staff, we encourage you to avoid checking a bag. If you plan on checking a bag, you must use the single clear bag provided by NYCRUNS. You may not put another full bag/backpack/briefcase inside the clear bag. All items must fit inside the clear bag. NYCRUNS reserves the right to search your bag at any time.
Toilets will be provided and cleaned throughout the event.
While we encourage you to bring your own hydration, water will be available on the course for the 10K and at the finish. Bagels, spreads, fresh fruit and more will make up the usual great NYCRUNS post race spread to replenish you at the finish line.
The giveaway for this race will be a tech shirt*. Free photos will be available within a week of the race.
* In order to cut down on waste, we try not to overorder and sizes are not guaranteed. We recommend you register as early as possible to ensure you get your size mailed to you.
