Have you ever wondered what once stood along Route 1 where the Weis supermarket and CarMax are located today? For more than forty years, this was the site of Laurel Raceway, Maryland’s first harness-racing track, renamed Freestate Raceway in 1980. But North Laurel’s connection to horse racing began decades earlier, when the surrounding countryside was home to some of America’s most celebrated thoroughbred horsemen. Join local history researcher and author Wayne Davis as he uncovers this little-known chapter of North Laurel history.
