Six IN-PERSON sessions September 14, 28, October 5, 12, 19, 26 (Does not meet September 21) Although it’s been over 250 years since Jane Austen died, her novels and the characters she created are more popular than ever. Using film and other media, this course will review her novels and explore the relevant themes that apply today. Class discussion will offer fresh perspectives on Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and other works, showing how Austen’s sharp observations about love, class, ambition, and social pressure echo in modern life. Retired since May 2013, Dorothy Carrillo was an Associate Professor at Georgia State University and the Associate Director for Operations of Project Healthy Grandparents, an organization that supports grandparents raising their grandchildren. Prior to her career in higher education, she was a practicing Social Worker with experience in school and medical social work, group work, and family counseling. For senior learning programs, Dorothy develops courses centered around subjects that have absorbed her interest for years, including the legacy of Jane Austen.
