Description

We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Monday, October 19, 2026.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives: Folk Hits of the 1950s and '60sWhile The Weaver’s two-sided 1950 hit [“Goodnight Irene”/”Tzena, Tzena, Tzena”] was its start, a Folk music “boom” took five more years to develop. Harry Belafonte introduced Calypso, the Kingston Trio revived traditional folk songs, and they soon were joined by the likes of the Highwaymen and the Limeliters. Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul & Mary helped define Folk as protest music in the 1960s, as the genre shifted from singles to LPs.
Host: Hugo Keesing, Retired Professor, University of Maryland.
