Ever wanted to learn how to coal forge? Whether you are a beginner or are an experienced smith who is looking for a new challenge, this is the class for you! It only seems natural to forge with train-related items when working with coal. In this 3-hour class, students will create the Durango Spike Knife—an epic mild-steel blade with a twisted integral handle forged from railroad spikes. While learning to operate a coal forge and read and maintain proper blade temperature in a variable environment, students will unleash their creativity and discover the awesome effects of different handle twists, such as the Pineapple, the Box, or the Dragon Scale! By the end of the 3-hour class, students will be able to: -Recognize heat changes by the color of the metal (an extra challenge in an outdoor coal forge!) -Taper and bevel a mild-steel blade. -Use twisting and chiseling techniques to achieve different handle designs. -Apply grinding and polishing techniques to create a fully functional blade. Get ready to get your hands dirty and have an absolute blast!! Because we may be forging outside, be sure to bring sunscreen, hats, and any other desired sun protection.
