Students begin this unit by exploring the different types of noises and sounds around them. They then explore the concept of vibrations and how they are related to sound, how sound waves travel, and how the pitch and volume of sound can be changed. This is a great way for young minds to explore physics concepts through a series of safe, connected activities and investigations. Standards: Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. (1-PS4-1) Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance. (1-PS4-4) Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties. (2-PS1-1) Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose. (2-PS1-2)
