COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The USA Volleyball Indoor High Performance Department has named 21 athletes to comprise the U.S. Women's Junior National Training Team for the 2010 season.
The 21 athletes were selected through tryouts held between February and April of this year. The players will take part in a second tryout held May 20-23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. At the conclusion of the second tryout camp, the top 12 players will be selected to compete at the 2010 NORCECA Women's Junior (U-20) Continental Championship set for July 4-12 at Tijuana, Mexico.
Selected players include setters Madison Kamp (Orland Park, Ill., Ultimate Volleyball Club), Molly Kreklow (Hamlake, Minn., University of Missouri), Megan Moenoa (Long Beach, Calif., Mizuno Long Beach), Carly Thomas (Swansea, Ill., Southwest Illinois Juniors) and Courtney Thomas (DeKalb, Ill., Sports Performance). Middle blockers selected include Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif., Coast), Madison Mahaffey (Vestavia Hills, Ala., Team Sting), Olivia Okoro (Carrollton, Texas, Dallas Premier) and Carly Wopat (Goleta, Calif., Santa Barbara VBC).
Outside/Opposite hitters include Jane Croson (Lakewood, Calif., Sport Shack), Crystal Graff (Madison, Wis., Capital Volleyball Academy), Andrea McHugh (Yorba Linda, Calif., Laguna Beach), Kelly Reeves (San Diego, Encinitas WAVE), Taylor Simpson (Colorado Springs, Colo., Colorado Juniors), Elise Walch (Palm City, Fla., TCVB), Rachel Williams (Los Gatos, Calif., Vision) and Samantha Wopat (Goleta, Calif., Santa Barbara VBC). Players who could fill either middle blocker or opposite roles are Haleigh Hampton (Huntington Beach, Calif., Cal Juniors) and Elizabeth McMahon (Liberty Township, Ohio, Team Z).
Jennifer Bonilla (Reseda, Calif., Sport Shack) is listed as a libero on the roster, while Stephanie Holthus is listed as either a libero or outside hitter (Eligin, Ill., Fusion).
"I am excited about the prospects of this group," USA Volleyball Managing Director of Indoor High Performance Tom Pingel said. "It is a nice blend of experienced players, along with some athletes that have yet to wear 'USA' in an international competition. The second tryout will be very competitive."
Serving as head coach for the 2010 U.S. Women's Junior National Team is Rob Browning, the head women's volleyball coach at St. Mary's College (Calif.). Matt McShane, head coach at Air Force, will serve as assistant coach and Jennifer Carey, director of volleyball operations at University of California-Berkeley, will serve as assistant coach/technical coordinator. Pingel will serve as the team leader for the team at the NORCECA Women's Junior Continental Championship.
Kreklow is the only player currently enrolled in college as she enrolled early the University of Missouri. Both Wopat sisters, Carly Thomas, Okoro, McHugh and Bonilla competed last year for the U.S. Girls' Youth National Team at the FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship. Bonilla, Kreklow, Reeves, Carly Thomas and Carly Wopat were members of the 2008 U.S. Girls' Youth National Team that won gold at the NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Championship.
