The Webcor Builders Women's Professional Cycling Team held their press launch on March 19, 2010 at the Webcor Builders corporate headquarters—which just happens to be across the street from AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team.
Webcor Builders, in its sixth year of existence, is the longest continually sponsored United States women's pro team. Props to Webcor CEO Andy Ball and his subcontractors, who have kept their support flowing.
Webcor Builders has a long history of attracting some of the top racers from North American. Former rider, now team director, Karen Brems is the 1994 World Time Trial Champion and a 2000 Olympian. Dr. Christine Thorburn, who retired in 2008, was a two-time U.S. Olympian (2004, 2008) and won multiple national championships.
For 2010, the team is anchored by Katheryn Mattis, who has been a member since the inception of the team, winning the National Road Championships in the squad's inaugural year. Gina Grain, an Olympian in 2008 for Canada, returns in 2010. She is a talented field sprinter who can win, as she did in 2009, from a bunch kick or a small breakaway.
Erinne Willock was also a 2008 Olympian for Canada, and is considered one of the team's main stage race riders, along with Mattis. Returning to the team for 2010, Alex Wrubleski was also a 2008 Olympian for Canada. She is an all-arounder who is a contender in both one-day and multi-day races.
New to the squad for 2010 are Joelle Numainville, the Pan American Games Champion in 2009, and Austrian Andrea Graus, who is a former national champion. Americans Ally Stacher and Lindsay Myers round out the team.
Looking forward to the London Games in 2012, the Webcor Builders team would like to improve on its four Olympic selections in 2008. However, since UCI points earned in Europe are only critical during Olympic years, the team will focus on racing in the United States this season. On the schedule for 2010 are events such as Redlands Classic, Tour of the Gila, Joe Martin Stage Race, Nature Valley Grand Prix and the Cascade Classic.
