Peak Season: An Autumn Botanical Field Journalw/Margaret SaylorSeptember 26, 202610:00am - 1:00pmLate September is the year's most generous moment for the sketchbook artist. Leaves are at the height of their color, seed heads are heavy and ripe, berries glow against darkening stems, and the first hints of bare branch architecture are just beginning to show. The landscape is abundant, specific, and fleeting — exactly the conditions a field journal was made for.
In this hands-on workshop, you will build a field journal page dedicated to autumn's peak, working in graphite, Micron pen, and watercolor. Learn to observe the colors, textures, and forms of the season with fresh attention, and develop techniques for recording botanical subjects at their most expressive moment. Leave with a richly worked spread and the skills and confidence to continue your field journal practice as the season unfolds around you.
All skill levels welcome.
Materials:Graphite tools: Pencils of a range of hardnesses, including 2B, HB, and 2HSharpeners: KUM Longpoint sharpener suggestedErasers: Kneaded eraser (SEED brand) and MonoZero eraser by TombowSketchbook: Explore a range of sketchbook formats and determine which one best suits your style and budget. I prefer smaller-scale books with great quality hot-pressed watercolor paper. Suggestions include a field sketchbook from WonderCabin on Etsy; Hahnemuhle sketchbook in white or a toned paper, such as buff or gray; or an EtchrLabs square sketchbook. Whichever you choose, love it so you will be inspired to continue working in it.Color work: Watercolor paints, brushes, colored pencils, or medium of your choice.Micron Pen: Using a variety of tip sizes (.005, .05, .003, .03, and .01) and colors (I prefer sepia over black), create elegant line drawings that can be enhanced with color later on.An assortment of autumn plants and items from nature that inspire you.
