Buildings in the Landscape w/Claudia Rilling A twelve (12) session course
Buildings in the Landscape In this 12-week class students will learn how to approach buildings within the landscape in simple terms without the use of difficult perspective techniques. The first few weeks will be focused on simplifying and seeing shapes clearly. The remainder of the class students will work larger and learn how to paint edges and details to accurately capture the appearance of buildings.
Week 1: Bring in a series of reference photos of well-lit building(s) within a landscape setting. Bring 2 small surfaces- a thin panel or primed paper. Size: 5x7, 8x8. Not larger. (the following weeks we will move to larger surfaces)
Level: Intermediate to advanced. Beginner painting techniques will not be covered.
Main topics covered: Selecting photo references, notan and 2-3 value studies, sighting angles, edges, handling details.
Medium: oil paint, pastel, acrylic (Instructor works in oil paint).
Materials: -For the first two weeks bring very small panels or primed paper depending on your medium. We will start by doing small single session paintings. -Photo references to work from -Brushes, paints (instructor will be using oil), palette knife, palette or palette paper, rags/paper towels, mineral spirits and sealable jars, any other medium of choice, any other painting supplies you like to work with.
-Size: week 1: very small surfaces (2x). Weeks 3-12: larger: roughly 12”x12”-16”x20”.
