About this event
Have you ever wondered what it's like to have your own chickens? In this 3 session course, Leo will teach you the in's and out's of raising chickens on your own property. At the end of the last session you will feel confident in understanding Maine State and Local laws regarding raising chickens, purchasing and choosing chickens, collecting + storing eggs, being able to build or choose a practical coop, raising chickens responsibly within your neighborhood and taking care of them all year round! Session 1: Getting Started (Law, Safety & Setup) -Chicken Law (state + local) -Zoning Basics -Importance of local ordinances -Styles/Types of chickens -Breed Specifications -Purchasing Process: local vs. hatcheries -Safety(1-5months): Handling, Heating, Brooding, Predators + Sanitation -Common Mistakes/Wrong Choices: How to Avoid Them Session 2: Chickens for Eggs (Care, Feeding + Egg Handling) -Laying Years: 6 months to 4+ years, what affects production -Food, Care and Training: layer vs grower feed, grit / calcium / supplements -Egg Care: common issues, dirty eggs, thin shells, soft eggs, no eggs -Nest Boxes: beddings -Water Systems -Treats: safe vs. not safe -Hygiene / Food Safety: eggs for you, your family & neighbors Session 3: Chicken Husbandry, Coops & Living with others ***Please note this session will be held off-site at the instructors personal home chicken coop*** -Coop Design: space requirements, ventilation throughout the seasons -Winter Protection: cold, snow and frostbite prevention -Solar Options: heated waterers, lighting considerations -Chicken Run: predator protection, mud management -Tools & Utensils needed -The Law + Neighbors: noise, smell, conflict prevention -Chickens & Family Pets: dogs, cats, children safety and integrating chickens into your households
