Spend two mornings exploring the art of traditional stone carving with instructor Bethany Lee while creating a hand-carved stone planter embellished with Gothic-inspired foliage. On Saturday, students will learn the fundamentals of working with stone, including the safe and effective use of basic carving tools, as they shape and begin their planter. On Sunday, students will build on those skills and learn techniques for laying out and carving a decorative Gothic foliage design, transforming their planter into a more detailed finished piece. Stone Carving: Planter with Gothic Foliage is the two-day option for students who would like the full weekend experience. Those who would prefer to attend Saturday only and create the planter without the additional Gothic foliage instruction can register for the half-day Stone Carving: Planter workshop instead. Looking for even more time to carve? Open Studio: Guided Stone Carving will be offered separately on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Two-day workshop students may register for one or both sessions to continue working on their projects with Bethany available for guidance and questions. *Please note: - Stone carving involves repetitive action of hammering a chisel - Stone carving is primarily done while standing. Born and raised in Minnesota, Bethany is a sculptor, working primarily in stone, for whom drawing and painting form an integral part of her creative process. She holds a BA in sculpture (’03) from the University of Dallas, and she is a 2019 graduate from the drawing and painting program at the Florence Academy of Art (Jersey City location). When not in the studio, Bethany can often be found entertaining her nieces and nephew, reading at a local coffee shop, or wandering around in the woods somewhere in the Blueridge Mountains.
