Discover the art of coiled pine needle basketry as you create a beautiful and functional basket using pine needles collected in Virginia and other parts of the eastern United States. You'll learn how to treat, prepare, and dye pine needles before beginning your basket with a pre-drilled wooden center. From there, you'll explore a variety of coiling stitches and techniques as you build and shape your basket, working at your own pace with guidance from the instructor. You'll also learn how to finish your piece and leave with the foundational skills to continue exploring pine needle basketry on your own. This class is designed for beginners. No previous basket-making or crafting experience is needed, and all materials are provided. *Class price includes materials fee. Vicki Cornish is a retired marine biologist and life-long crafter. In addition to making baskets, she enjoys painting, sewing, jewelry making, mosaics, crocheting, and macrame. From her first coiled basketry class she was hooked, learning and expanding her skills to take advantage of the abundance of pine trees that grow around her home in Virginia. Largely self-taught from books and online resources, she uses traditional methods combined with colorful cording and recycled treasures to create distinctive and functional baskets. Vicki has been teaching both beginner and advanced pine needle basketry classes since mid-2024 and keeps in regular contact with her students to provide encouragement and opportunities to come together to share ideas and projects and learn new techniques.
