*Students need to be comfortable working with willow as a material and performing the following weaves with little to no instruction: 3 rod wale, French rand. In this class students will make a useful and shapely basket using Anne Mette Hjørnholm's take on the traditional Catalan base. We will begin with pre-made oval hoops, and weave the base in the Catalan style where the weavers also form the stakes. The upsett is woven with chased 3 rod wale and then students have a choice of side weaves to bring up the height. We finish with a 4 rod top wale and woven border. High quality leather straps are then added to complete the tote. This is a great basket for intermediate willow weavers looking for a fun way to make oval work as well as practice shaping and to refine weaving techniques. Students in this class must be comfortable working in willow as this basket requires having a good "feel" for the willow, so you can bend but not snap or kink at the base weave and upsett. *Willow can be challenging to work with, someone with hand issues or weak hands may find this class difficult.  *Class price includes materials fee. *Instructor provides all tools and materials necessary for the project, but students are welcome to bring their personal weaving tools if they already have them. Jes Clark (they/them) is the farmer and weaver behind Willow Vale Farm in Stanfordville, NY, where they grow willow using pesticide-free, regenerative practices. Jes creates traditional and contemporary functional baskets, allowing each piece of willow to help shape the finished form. Teaching since 2018, Jes has worked with hundreds of students at venues including the Stowe Basketry Festival, Northeast Basketmakers Guild, and New York Botanical Garden.
