About this event
Could you survive a night in the wilderness with only the gear in your hiking pack? Want to learn how? This weekend camp for adults (18+) will cover all the necessary skills: shelter building, finding water, fire making, foraging, navigation, and basic wilderness first aid. Students will learn to read the land, make wise decisions, and respond with confidence to common emergencies that can arise during outdoor recreation. Students may also choose to camp overnight in Waterford between the two class days and put their new skills to the test. *Overnight camping will include 2 hours of wilderness instruction, including cooking over a fire. *Students should bring: sturdy, closed-toed shoes, hat for sun protection, drinking water (plan for at least 2 liters/day), lunch for each day *Students who choose the overnight camping session option should bring, change of clothes, and anything else student needs for their comfort overnight, breakfast food. Optional: sunscreen, bug spray, notebook and pencil/paper to take notes. Laura Handley has been a hiker, camper, and outdoor enthusiast since childhood. Driven by a deep respect for the beauty and danger of the natural world, she has traveled to many remote places and learned firsthand what it takes to get there and get home safely. Laura is also a Virginia Master Naturalist and does volunteer work in habitat restoration, invasive plant removal, and nature education for children and adults.
