Create a hand-carved stone planter while learning the fundamentals of traditional stone carving with instructor Bethany Lee. In this half-day workshop, students will learn how to safely and effectively use basic stone-carving tools while shaping and finishing a small planter to take home. Stone Carving: Planter can be taken as a stand-alone Saturday workshop, making it a great introduction to stone carving. Students who would like to continue their project and learn more advanced decorative carving techniques can instead register for Stone Carving: Planter with Gothic Foliage, a two-day workshop held Saturday and Sunday, February 20 & 21. The two-day workshop includes Saturday's planter instruction and continues Sunday with the addition of a carved Gothic foliage design. Want some extra carving time? Students can also register separately for Guided Stone Carving Open Studio, offered Saturday & Sunday afternoons. Stay and continue working on your planter with Bethany available to offer guidance and answer questions as you work. *Please note: - Stone carving involves repetitive action of hammering a chisel - Stone carving is primarily done while standing. Born and raised in Minnesota, Bethany is a sculptor, working primarily in stone, for whom drawing and painting form an integral part of her creative process. She holds a BA in sculpture (’03) from the University of Dallas, and she is a 2019 graduate from the drawing and painting program at the Florence Academy of Art (Jersey City location). When not in the studio, Bethany can often be found entertaining her nieces and nephew, reading at a local coffee shop, or wandering around in the woods somewhere in the Blueridge Mountains.
