Discover the art of coiled pine needle basketry as you create a beautiful and functional basket with a coiled center, using pine needles collected in Virginia and other parts of the eastern United States. You’ll learn how to treat, prepare, and dye pine needles before creating the coiled center that will become the foundation of your basket. You’ll explore a variety of stitching and coiling techniques as you build and shape your basket, working at your own pace with guidance from the instructor. You’ll also learn finishing techniques and leave with skills you can continue using in future basketry projects. This class is a great fit for those with some familiarity with basket making or experience with sewing, fiber arts, or other hands-on crafts. Previous pine needle basketry experience is not required, and all materials are provided. *Class price includes materials fee. Vicki Cornish is a retired marine biologist and life-long crafter. In addition to making baskets, she enjoys painting, sewing, jewelry making, mosaics, crocheting, and macrame. From her first coiled basketry class she was hooked, learning and expanding her skills to take advantage of the abundance of pine trees that grow around her home in Virginia. Largely self-taught from books and online resources, she uses traditional methods combined with colorful cording and recycled treasures to create distinctive and functional baskets. Vicki has been teaching both beginner and advanced pine needle basketry classes since mid-2024 and keeps in regular contact with her students to provide encouragement and opportunities to come together to share ideas and projects and learn new techniques.
