Description
Join the Audain School of Art & Design’s Portfolio Development Workshop Series and learn new techniques, materials, and approaches from some of Vancouver’s most inspiring professional artists and university-level educators. Developed in alignment with Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s portfolio guidelines, each day of the series offers a unique experience led by a different guest artist. Students will take part in two workshops designed to strengthen their portfolios in two key areas: experimentation and the development of a strong, personal artistic voice. Participants may choose to attend individual workshops or the entire series. Register now!Each workshop day runs from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM with 1 hour for lunch.Cost is $99.00, lunch not included.
Part 1 – Creative Methods & Materials WorkshopStudio 3019:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Photography as Fine Art - Past, Present and FutureLed by: Marlene Yuen In this workshop, students will work on quick drawing exercises and exploration with low tech relief printing processes and mark making.
Marlene Yuen (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works on the unceded and ancestral home territories of the x?m??kw?y??m (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and S?l?ílw?ta?/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Her current focus is on illustrations, prints, comics, zines and handmade books. Marlene’s books and zines have been retained in special collections archives nationally and internationally. She has also created artworks about Vancouver’s historic Chinatown and Chinese Canadian workers for museums, galleries and public art programs. Her mural, The Journeys Here, is currently part of a traveling exhibition, Odysseys and Migration, at the Royal BC Museum.
Part 2 – Critique Speak WorkshopStudio 3011:30 PM – 3:00 PM
Led by: Allison Yasukawa
Artist and Associate Professor Allison Yasukawa will help students unpack the feeling of taking risks and how to language their creative process. Students will be led on a creative discussion on how to talk about their own work and the work of others, as well as how to articulate their personal point of view as an artist. All key skills in crafting a artist statement true to who you are.
Allison Yasukawa is an interdisciplinary maker and deep language nerd. She holds an MFA in Studio Arts and an MA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Chicago. As both an artist and educator, Allison is invested in what communication scholar Joanne Gilbert calls "heckling the status quo.” She has developed arts-based English language programs and taught at art and design schools including the California Institute of the Arts, the California College of the Arts, the Maryland Institute College of Art, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has presented workshops internationally on art-making and language-making in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast; and Changsha, China and is working on a book about language and/as creative practice. Allison is an Associate Professor in Foundation at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and lives in Vancouver on the unceded, traditional territories of the x?m??k??y??m (Musqueam), S?wx_wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and s?l?ilw??ta?? (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.
Part 3 - Emily Carr University of Art + Design – Short Presentation and Q&AStudio 4023:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Led by: ECU Student Recruitment & Admissions
A staff member from the ECU Recruitment & Admissions team will be on hand give a short presentation on a variety of topics including portfolio guidelines, choosing programs, student life, and more.
