History talks continue this fall at the Schmidt House! Join us each month for a free hour-long talk on social or natural history, each presented by a recognized expert. Talks begin at noon on the first Thursday of the month.
Thursday, October 1 Topic: Lincoln, the Civil War, and the Pacific Northwest Discover how Abraham Lincoln shaped our region, one he never visited – and how the Pacific Northwest, in turn, helped shape the Union he fought to preserve. Long before the Civil War, Lincoln was offered a leadership role in the Oregon Territory (which included modern-day Washington), a little-known sign of the Pacific Northwest’s national importance. Presented by Ira Kitmacher, a Georgetown graduate professor, retired federal executive, county history commissioner, columnist, and frequent public speaker. Ira specializes in history and folklore.
