About this event
What's the deal with "Big Night"? Are you curious about Maine's amphibians? Every spring, amphibians migrate to breeding sites in wetlands and vernal pools. Warm (40F+), rainy nights draw out a flurry of activity, and are known as "big nights" due to the volume of migrating amphibians. Road crossings are often a necessary but perilous part of their journey. Researchers and citizen scientists monitor stretches of road to aid amphibians with safe crossing and gather valuable data for their conservation. On April 6th, join wildlife ecologist Marisa Monroe for a species ID lecture, then head out into the field with Island Heritage Trust environmental educators Martha Bell and Torri Robbins and other local amphibian enthusiasts. Learn about spotted salamanders, spring peepers, pickerel frogs, eastern newts, four-toed salamanders, and more; then see them up close! We'll then keep the surveys going, sending out alerts when conditions are good and a leader is available. You'll also get to visit a vernal pool with Martha Bell during April Break (day/time TBD).
