About this event
Join our Graphic Novel Book Group! Island Institute Fellow, avid reader, and former bookseller Grace will lead discussion of some first-rate graphic novels. Meeting monthly on 3rd Mondays. January's book is "The Essential Calvin and Hobbes", by Bill Watterson. Maybe you grew up reading C&H or seeing it in the funny pages. Maybe you discovered Watterson's wonderful, insightful humor as an adult. Or maybe you have yet to experience this genre-defining comic strip. Regardless, you're in for a treat! In this meeting we'll be discussing strips from 1985-87, including the enticingly-titled collection "Something Under the Bed is Drooling". Besides enjoying his humor and philosophy, we'll look at the way Watterson tells stories in 3 panels or in longer, multi-day strips (notably the "raccoon saga"). About this Book Group: By telling stories using visuals as well as text, graphic novels really pack a punch and offer fascinating points of view. From classics like Maus to newer reads like Ducks, we'll discuss a variety in this book group. This is a group for people who love stories. If you enjoy traditional reading, why not explore what a graphic novel can offer? On the flip side, if you find it hard to concentrate on dense text, you'll love the graphic novel format! We're grateful to Stonington Public Library and Chase Emerson Memorial Library for supplying reading copies for this book group! When you sign up, let us know if you'd like to reserve a library copy. If you have questions or are having trouble with this registration platform please email gupham@su76.org or call 207-656-6262.
