About this event
Learn to kayak safely around a working waterfront! This is a special DIACE collaboration with local boat builder Dwight Staples and Will Steinharter, ACA Level 3 Sea Kayak instructor and Maine Guide (Osprey's Echo Sea Kayaking). Together, they will teach you to navigate around commercial vessels and plan your routes. What You'll Learn: 1. Introductory strategies and tools for route planning and on-the-water navigation 2. Practical skills, awareness, and etiquette for kayaking in working waterways, specifically in the Stonington Archipelago 3. Where to launch your kayak in Deer Isle and Stonington We're excited to offer both land- and sea-based instruction during this half-day course. If you opt for the practical tour portion, that means you'll enjoy a beautiful day on the water, right out of Webb Cove! Guest speaker Dwight, fisherman and boat builder, will chat to students about the fishermen’s perspective of recreational small boats, including the hazards boaters face due to their size. Did you know that kayaks don’t reliably show up on radar? Often fishermen can’t even see kayakers until it’s too late. We recommend you have some prior experience kayaking, especially if you are joining the tour (i.e. you know how to paddle and steer). Kayaks and standard gear are provided onsite during the class. Please bring your own water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, and other items that will keep you comfortable! If you have questions or would like to pay by cash or check, please get in touch with Grace by emailing gupham@su76.org or calling 207-656-6262.
