About this event
Beekeeping for Beginners Is keeping bees on your Bucket List? Or are you already a beekeeper who is struggling to get your bees through the winter? Whether you are new to beekeeping or have tried it before and realized there is a lot to learn, this class is for you! This five-session course will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to be successful. We will cover honeybee biology to help you better understand “bee-havior,” as well as the fundamentals of beekeeping–including vertical and horizontal Langstroth hives, how to install a nuc, essential equipment, pest and disease management, and swarm control. There is a first-night Materials Fee to the Maine Somerset Beekeepers Association (SBA) $55 cash or check which includes your mentor, the book, and a one-year membership to the SBA, which meets monthly in Skowhegan to discuss what to focus on in the upcoming month during the winter. We also invite guest speakers for our continuing education. We make bulk purchases to offer supplies to our members at discounted prices. We also have a club honey extractor that we rent out to our members. Schedule: 6:00 PM—8:30 PM | 5 Weeks, Wed. Feb. 4, 11, 18, Thurs. Feb. 26, & Wed.
