We're sorry, but this activity is over. The last meeting was Monday, August 17, 2020.
Calling all Black, Indigenous and People of Color who want to hike 3 miles!Join Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, in partnership with Saint Paul Parks and Recreation for a 3 mile hike of Pike Island, which is located at Bdote, the confluence of the mighty Mississippi and Minnesota rivers. This is a key location in Minnesota’s history and present day. Join us in the beauty of summer while we discuss this location’s importance in Minnesota and create space together to explore and learn.
We’ll meet at the Visitor Center parking lot which is two miles from the park entrance on the main park road (so plan an additional 8-10 minutes from what google maps tells you).
State park permits are required on all vehicles and they can be purchased on line ahead of time at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/permit.html. They can also be purchased at the self-registration station upon entering the park.
If the $7 cost of a permit is a barrier to your participation, please email Krista.Jensen@state.mn.us before the day of the event.
Finally, please be aware Hwy 5 is under construction and there are various closures to consider when planning your route to the park. To help you plan your trip please visit https://www.aroundtheairport.com/.
Accessibility notes: We’ll be adventuring on flat unpaved trails. Some spots may be sandy, or wet and muddy, depending on recent weather. Hikers should wear sturdy footwear, comfortable clothes, and bring a full water bottle. A portable toilet is located at the parking lot at the visitor center. Staff will provide hand sanitizer and bug spray.
Registration Notes: Pre-registration is required so we can be sure to comply with CDC guidelines re: COVID and social distancing.
Please note that if you have not yet created a profile in our online registration system, you will need to do so to register for this (or any) class/workshop/hike that we do. When creating a profile, the system asks you to select one of two gender options. We recognize that gender is on a spectrum and apologize if your gender identity is not listed as an option. You may choose the one that most aligns with your identity, or you can skip the question altogether.
To create a safe space for all, we will start our hike with introductions – including the opportunity to share your pronoun. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com with any questions.
