About this event
When was the last time you cleaned your sewing machine? Ever oiled it? Learn to maintain your sewing machine and save money! Regular, routine maintenance will allow you to get many more years out of your machine. Discover the tools and products you can use to clean and maintain your machine. Discuss common problems like thread breaks or skipped stitches and how to fix them. Learn, or get a refresher on, how to rethread a machine, replace needles, and adjust tension. Materials: Bring your sewing machine and an extension cord or power strip. Additionally, the instructor requests the following basic sewing machine repair supplies (hopefully, some of these are lying around the house!): headlamp and/or small flashlight, stubby flathead screwdriver, 1 or 2 long-handled screwdrivers, Phillips head screwdriver, 1 large tweezers, 1 set of dental tools/scrapers (with several types of heads), $4.50 on Amazon, Krud Kutter kitchen degreaser, $13.50 on Amazon, universal sewing machine oil with Zoom spout, $10.50 on Amazon, plastic pry tool kit, $6 on Amazon, pipe cleaners, Q-Tips, shop towels/low-fuzz paper towels (recommends 1 roll Scott Blue Shop Towels, $2.87), and 1 or 2 toothbrushes. Optional: Blue Creeper Multipurpose lubricant, padded mat to protect your work surface, Superlube Synthetic Grease, magnetic tool, small magnetic tray to hold parts, 1 or 2 small spray bottles, and 1 squeeze bottle with needle cap. Jen Erickson is a lifelong sewing enthusiast and long-term educator. She has completed coursework in sewing machine maintenance and repair in order to save herself money and time!
