About this event
Join other beginning and advanced students on outings to enjoy watercolor painting and build friendships with other artists. Learn to manipulate watercolor media and tonal drawing to recreate the appearance of nature with an awareness of forms and their surrounding elements. Our basis will be the study of perspective, composition, value, and color. Class location will be discussed weekly. Prerequisite: Watercolor Basics. 1 small tube each of cadmium yellow (light), cobalt blue, and alizarin crimson watercolor paints and any other colors you already have (recommended: Winsor & Newton Cotman or higher quality); 1 paint palette (recommended: folding palette); 1 round #10 watercolor brush (recommended: Winsor & Newton Sceptre Gold II); 1 inch-wide flat brush; 1 drawing pencil #2H; 1 eraser; 1 lightweight board or piece of cardboard or portable watercolor easel; 1 lidded container for water; 2 sheets of Arches watercolor paper, 140 lb. cold press, 22x30 inches; and (optional) 1 folding chair. Note: Please purchase Arches, as the quality of watercolor paper is essential for handling the techniques you will be taught in class. Total supply cost around $90. Visit The Art Mart in Portland to purchase your materials and mention Russel’s class to receive 10% off of your order. Russel Whitten, a local artist and teacher, studied at the Art Students League of New York and Heartwood College of Art and is a member of the Ogunquit Art Association/Barn Gallery. Students adore his laid-back, encouraging demeanor.
