First Impressions:

Out of the box, I’m blown away by how light these are. I wouldn’t say that they’re deceptively light because they do look lean and mean, but these are lighter than many of the elite racing shoes that have a 100 dollar higher price tag. I’m also pleasantly surprised with the overall look of this shoe. For a brand that most Americans probably aren’t familiar with, Mammut has created a sexy trail shoe that’s visually appealing.

Getting the shoes on my feet isn’t the easiest. They have an integrated sockliner design for a slip-in fit, but it’s definitely an effort to squeeze into them. I’m genuinely concerned that I’m going to rip the pull tabs on the top and heel from the force that I’m using to pull them up. I wouldn’t want to be in a trail triathlon with these where I’m being timed in transition. With that said, once they’re on my feet, they are comfortable, and the fit is super secure.

The mesh on the uppers is lightweight and breathable, and the integrated sockliner means that there isn’t a bulky tongue that’s limiting heat dispersion.

They’re quite fast. They have a nylon-based plate to aid in propulsion, and my turnover felt quick and easy. I love that they’re using Vibram outsoles here, but these are very low-profile lugs. These shoes are definitely best suited for dry trails.

While Mammut may not be a household name in the U.S., the Aenergy Trail Speed Low certainly deserve some attention as they feature high-quality specs that are comparable to higher-end racing shoes, while also ringing up at a reasonable price point of $169.

At only 8.8 oz (US Men’s 9.5), the Trail Speed Low are some of the lightest trail shoes on the market. They feature a one-piece mesh upper for a slip-in fit that provides a secure lockdown. The multi-layered midsole includes their nylon Flextron Pro plate to provide propulsion. One benefit of a flexible nylon plate versus the more rigid carbon plates that are now standard in most super shoes is that the nylon plate can flex and contour, which can be critically important for a shoe that needs to bend itself around rocks and roots. Their lightweight Mammut Core Plus foam complements the plate for a ride that encourages quicker turnover and aggressive paces on the trails. These are designed with the Vibram Litebase outsole with grippy rubber; although, the lug depth is shallow so they’re best suited for dry conditions or situations where the route may transition from trail to pavement frequently.

“Speed Trainer” is a term that is typically used for road shoes, but Mammut may have just created one for the trail with the Aenergy Trail Speed Low as these are excellent shoes for fast training runs on the trail or shorter trail races. For longer trail racing, Mammut does offer a sister shoe to this model, the Aenergy Trail Ultra Low that uses a similar plate, upper, and foam, but with a slightly higher stack for comfort.

First Impressions:

I was surprised how much I liked this shoe compared to other styles from them. I really liked the design of the heel and the mesh upper. it kept out the mud while still being flexible and breathable. I also liked the propulsion of the carbon plate. the cushioning is placed well under the forefoot-- just enough to stay comfortable but not sink. it's a pretty responsive shoe and the carbon plate was pretty comfortable and flexible compared to other brands where you feel it because it's not forgiving. The fit was nice and compact in the midfoot and still roomy but not extra wide in the toe box. The 10k in the dry dirt was fast and pretty nimble for the weight and stack.

Things We Liked:


The vibram grip. I ran mostly in extremely muddy conditions and while my mates kept falling, I was able to stay upright! I can see where they would work in a mountainous terrain that still had dirt and gravel. you could easily transition with the cushioning it provides

Areas for Improvement:


Reinforce the toe a bit more. Since it was muddy, i did not kick roots but if I had I think I would have felt them. Also, adding a little more cushion at the heel would be nice if really wearing them for longer than a 50k
