Join retired USGS geologist John Brock for a fascinating exploration of the complex history and structure of Maine from the Precambrian to the present Cenozoic era. We’ll study underlying geologic ideas, plate tectonic theory, detailed geologic structure and hazards of Midcoast Maine, and the location of rockhounding localities nearby. Other topics covered: basic principles and methods of historical and physical geology; how to read and use scientific geologic maps; paleoclimate, ice ages, and recent climate change in Maine. Instructor John Brock led the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program for over twenty-five years working in various positions as an earth and environmental scientist, making use of remote sensing in coastal studies and natural resource management and focusing on storm impacts, flood inundation predictions, sea level rise impacts, long-term coastal change, and the mapping of shallow benthic habitats.
