About this event
Description
Join Colorado Native Plant Masters Mary Menz and Sandra Dick as they explore Ouray County wildflowers and natural settings. In this session, you’ll sit in quiet spots and draw what you see to help you hone ID skills. We’ll talk about interesting characteristics of plants and their historical uses.
Participants will receive small sketchbooks and will work in pencil, but are welcome to bring their own supplies such as colored pencils, watercolors, etc.
Registration includes a copy of their book Common Wildflowers of the San Juan Mountains ($49) or Wildflowers of Colorado’s Western Slope ($69).All groups are limited to 12 participants. Participants will meet and carpooling is recommended (we help facilitate this effort at the meet up location)—specific directions and more information will be provided via email prior to the event.
A waiver needs to be signed before the event. Please do so here
Please check your email the evening before class for any unexpected cancellations or weather-related updates.
About Mary Menz:
Mary brings a lifelong passion for both writing and the natural world to her wildflower walks. After more than thirty years as a corporate writer and editor—creating training materials and contributing to technical and regional publications—she gradually shifted her focus toward nature writing.
A certified Colorado Native Plant Master® (2014) and Master Naturalist, Mary has been a member of the teaching team for Colorado State University Extension’s Western Slope Native Plant Master courses. She is the author of several well-loved regional field guides, including Wildflowers of Colorado’s Western Slope, Wildflowers of the San Juan Mountains, and An Illustrated Guide to Western Colorado’s Wildflowers, as well as Common Wildflowers of the San Juan Mountains(2019).
For many years, Mary has led Weehawken’s annual wildflower walks—consistently popular outings that draw both locals and visitors eager to experience the region’s seasonal blooms.
With decades of experience as a writer and educator, Mary combines deep botanical knowledge with a gift for guiding, helping participants connect more closely with the landscapes and wildflowers of the Western Slope.
