About this event
The portrait has always stood as a central subject of drawing traditions, connecting the artist’s hand to the psychology and character of the sitter. In this intensive five-day workshop, participants will work from the same model all week, allowing for an in-depth exploration of structure, proportion, and likeness. Students will learn to approach portrait drawing through academic three-dimensional concepts, focusing on how light shapes the form of the head and how careful observation translates into clarity of design. Emphasis will be placed on block-in, the study of anatomy, and the refinement of planes, leading toward a finished, resolved portrait drawing. The class will also include short demonstrations and group discussion, where we will investigate historical methods, the physics of light, optics, and the visual strategies employed by master portraitists. Students will be guided in how to remain “on the form,” developing patience, focus, and precision in their drawing practice. This workshop is suitable for beginning to advanced students. Each participant will work at their own pace with personalized feedback and critique, gaining both technical knowledge and a deeper understanding of portraiture. • Day 1: Block-in of the head and establishing major proportions • Day 2: Constructive drawing and contour refinement • Day 3: Development of planar structure and anatomy of the head • Day 4: Study of light, shadow, and modeling of form • Day 5: Integration and finish — towards a resolved portrait drawing
