FIRST LEGO League Robotics Program with Sela Bucovetsky!
This program gives students the opportunity to design, build, and program a LEGO robot while working as part of a FIRST LEGO League team. Students will prepare for the annual FIRST LEGO League Challenge, which includes robot design, programming, problem-solving, teamwork, an innovation project, and the FIRST Core Values.
During the program, students will:

• Build and program a LEGO SPIKE Prime robot.
• Design attachments to complete missions on the FIRST LEGO League competition table.
• Learn and improve their coding, engineering, and problem-solving skills.
• Test, troubleshoot, and improve their robot through repeated practice.
• Research a real-world problem connected to this year’s FIRST LEGO League theme.
• Develop and present an Innovation Project.
• Practise explaining their robot design and programming choices to competition judges.
• Learn teamwork, communication, time management, and the FIRST Core Values.
• Prepare for the regional FIRST LEGO League competition in early February.
• Students will be divided into teams based on registration numbers, age, experience, and team compatibility. Returning students may be given more advanced building, programming, strategy, and leadership responsibilities.

Schedule and Program Structure:
Meetings will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Students may register to attend one meeting per week or both weekly meetings. However, students who attend both Tuesdays and Thursdays will have more time to practise, improve their robot, contribute to the Innovation Project, and prepare with their team. Regular attendance is especially important as the competition approaches.

The program will be divided into two sessions:
Session 1: October 13 to December 17
During the first session, students will be introduced to the annual challenge, form teams, begin building and programming their robots, develop competition strategies, and start working on their Innovation Projects.
Session 2: Early January to the regional competition in early February
The second session will begin shortly after New Year’s and continue until the regional competition. During this period, teams will focus on improving robot reliability, completing their Innovation Projects, preparing their judging presentations, and practising full competition rounds.
Students planning to compete should attend both the fall and winter sessions whenever possible. The second session continues directly from the work completed during the first session and is not intended to begin as a separate introductory program.
Competitions:
Teams will participate in a regional FIRST LEGO League competition in early February.
Teams that qualify at the regional event may be invited to attend the British Columbia provincial competition, which is normally held in early March in the Vancouver area.
Participation in the provincial competition is not guaranteed and will depend on the team’s results at the regional competition. Additional travel, accommodation, meals, registration, and transportation costs may apply for qualifying teams. These costs will be discussed with families if a team qualifies.
Program Fees:
The registration fee shown on the City’s website covers the regular weekly program sessions.
Please note that the City registration fee does not include the additional $100 regional competition fee per student. This fee will be collected separately from each student participating in the regional competition.
Any expenses associated with attending the provincial competition are also not included in the regular program fee. Families will receive more information about travel, accommodation, meals, transportation, and registration costs if their team qualifies.
Attendance and Team Commitment:
FIRST LEGO League is a team-based program. Each student’s attendance affects the entire team because students will have specific responsibilities related to the robot, programming, research, presentations, and competition preparation.
Students are welcome to attend once or twice per week, but the more consistently team members attend, the stronger and better prepared their team will be. Families should notify the instructor in advance when a student will miss a meeting, especially during the final weeks before competition.
