About this event
This 4-week course offers details of the Japanese traditional framing system. The learning is hands-on, step-by-step instruction on how it is done in real life by carpenters in Japan. The project completed during this class will be a small building that is custom designed in order to create opportunities for learning various elements that are unique to Japanese carpentry. There will be a wealth of information presented that has until now been only sparsely available here in the States. Please bring your tools sharpened and ready to work. We'll start with an overview of building design and application of traditional post and beam framing systems. Next, we will move into layout using the Japanese framing square and centerline methods. Standard wedged or pegged mortise and tenon joints, and housed dovetail joints will be utilized. We will move to the roof, covering curved beam scribing. With layout complete, we will cut out the joints, covering classic techniques for efficient and accurate execution. Finally, we can hand plane all of the surfaces and then assemble the frame. We encourage safe working practices and will not push or rush anyone to work faster than is appropriate. Come immerse yourself in a collaborative learning environment where we can celebrate the small wins, as well as the big ones. Required Tools: Upon registering, you will receive an email with the tooling that is required for this course and a student greeting from Dale Brotherton. It has important information about purchasing tools, including links to recommended tool dealers. Dale advises you to purchase and/or acquire tools early. Please expect to spend approximately $500 on tools. Prerequisites: Completion of one of our Japanese tools courses or equivalent experience. You will be required to outline your experience before you are allowed to register. Please sign up for the waitlist and wait for a call from PTSW staff.
