About this event
Boxes have a long history as useful, beautifully crafted objects, but for woodturners they have also become a wonderful canvas for precision and experimentation. Boxes may be small, but they offer surprisingly big opportunities for creativity and technical growth. We’ll explore the technical elements that make a well-designed box successful, including side- and end-grain construction, back hollowing, proportion, wall thickness, finials, and precise lid fits. From there, we’ll look at how those fundamentals can be used to move beyond traditional box forms and create work that is more expressive and personal. Through demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individual instruction, students will build their skills while experimenting with shape, texture, carving, and color. The goal is not simply to make a box, but to develop a better eye for form, greater tool control and the confidence to push the familiar form in new and unexpected directions. Required Tools All tools should be provided by the school and the instructor. However, if students would like to bring their own tools, here is a list of recommendations: ½” spindle gouge ¼” spindle gouge Square nose scraper Small round nose scraper ½” or ¾” skew Parting tool Power carver (such as Mastercarver Micro Pro, Dremel, Marathon, RAM) Any carving burrs that you have Prerequisites Students should have at least some basic turning experience before taking this course. You do not need to be advanced, but having a basic understanding of the tools will help to get the most out of the course.
