Every great project begins with a rock-solid foundation in shop safety and tool literacy. In this week-long, immersive course, you’ll demystify the core power tools of the woodshop and gain the practical skills needed to work independently. Our curriculum is built directly from the official proficiency checklist used by the Northwest Maritime Boatshop, so you’ll learn the safety protocols, material handling, and setup techniques required for future shop use. Over five days, you’ll transition from supervised practice to confident operation of the table saw, band saw, jointer, thickness planer, and drill press. You’ll put your new skills to work while creating a functional woodworking project. Participants will choose from a selection of classic projects, such as building a sturdy wooden toolbox for their personal gear or creating elegant, custom French curves used for traditional boat drafting and layout. By the end of the week, you’ll have completed your safety requirements, finished a tangible project, and unlocked the door to using the Boatshop for future woodworking and boatbuilding projects. Students under 18 who want to participate must be accompanied by a chaperone. Youth accompanied by a chaperone only need to pay one tuition fee.
