About this event
Take a deep dive into the traditional tool bag of a shipwright and explore the fascinating variety of hand tools that have shaped boats for centuries. This one-day class is a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the essential edge tools of the trade—tools like hand planes, chisels, drawknives, and spokeshaves that continue to play a critical role in wooden boatbuilding today. Led by experienced Boatshop staff, this workshop is designed to be highly interactive, giving students the chance to handle tools, ask questions, and build skills through guided demonstrations and hands-on practice. You’ll learn not only how to use these tools effectively, but also how to care for them properly, including sharpening techniques that will keep your blades cutting cleanly for years to come. Whether you're a beginning woodworker or an experienced builder looking to broaden your understanding of edge tools, this class offers practical knowledge in a unique environment. You’re encouraged to bring your own tools for evaluation, discussion, and sharpening practice—though a wide selection will be available at the shop as well. By the end of the day, you’ll leave with greater confidence and a deeper appreciation for the craft and tradition of wooden boatbuilding.
